About this object
Off-white silk taffeta wedding gown with short, puffed sleeves, a scalloped neckline, self-cording at the natural waist, and a scalloped hem that curves lower at the sides for a longer, fuller train at the rear. Gown is trimmed at neckline, sleeves and hem/train of skirt with approximately ½” of finely pleated silk chiffon finished with a purl hem. The neckline and sleeve openings are ornamented with vines and flower blossoms; embroidered and beaded with seed pearls, and dimensional petals of silk chiffon. Vines and blossoms occur in vertical columns intermittently adorning the skirt. Center back of the bodice fastens with a hidden, inner-bodice zipper and a functional set of self-covered buttons. Part of wedding ensemble worn by Marjorie “Marwee” Merriweather Durant to her 1956 wedding in Washington DC to Roland Bowles Waller.
