About this object
Rectangular placemat of large needle lace, known as gros point de Venice. The center horizontal, elongated oval is flanked at the shorter edges of the rectangle by a detailed, framed oval cameo of a Renaissance-style attired human bust worked over a fine mesh background, a stylized open blossom atop each points to the center of the oval featuring four more flowers. Two larger open blossoms finish the longer edges. Each of the far four corners features three flowers surrounded by curvilinear vines and leaves. Trimmed in scalloped leaf design overall.
