About this object
Artist used Karl Bruillov's "Portrait of Countess Somoilova", 1836, in Hillwood's Collection for inspiration. The costume consists of a full volume bell-shaped skirt with blown up 'grigot' (leg of mutton) sleeves. The effects of the light blue silk gown with lace trimmings have been captured with paint and translucent paper. The gown is accessorized with a wide belt simulating gold and carved stones. The gown is complemented with an Etruscan style necklace (2012.12.5) and a five-point coronet (2012.12.4) as shown in the painting. The ballerina style shoes (2012.12.2) and a fringed floral red shawl (2012.12.3) are also part of the set.
