About this object
Bas-relief plaster portrait of Alexander I of Russia. The plaster is painted terracotta red to resemble sealing wax. The portrait is placed on a black slate in a round frame signed on the plaster ' Brachard,' and dated 1816 at the bottom. The portrait is placed within a frame of ebonized wood with a domed glass cover. The Emperor is shown in profile with tousled hair and long sideburns. Alexander I, Alexander Pavlovich (December 12, 1777 – November 19, 1825); Emperor of Russia from March, 11 1801 to November 9, 1825). Alexander I was son of Emperor Pavel Petrovich I (1754-1802) and princess Sophia Dorothea Wuerttemberg-Mempelhard (Maria Fedorovna) and grandson of Catherine the Great (1729-1796).
