About this object
Bas-relief plaster portrait in a round frame signed Brachard, and dated 1816 at the bottom. Image painted sealing wax red to resemble wax. The portrait possibly depicts Charles X (1757-1836), King of France (1824-1830). He is shown in profile facing proper right with short tousled hair and long sideburns. He is wearing a military uniform: a jacket with broad lapels, high collar and epaulettes, a sash, a high cravat and the orders of Golden Fleece and Order of the Holy Spirit (Ordre du Saint-Esprit). The portrait is attached to a black slate background under a slightly domed glass in a round black frame (possibly of ebonized wood) with a gold fillet. On the reverse the portrait is overlaid with paper, on which there is a hand-written inscription in ink: “Charle X,” and a line underneath. The portrait is held in place by a ring of tooth-shaped clamps. On the sides of the frame there are two holes, possibly from a previous hanging support, and on top there is a small modern picture hook.
