POCKET WATCH

Creator(s): F. G. (Watchmaker)

About this object

The sides, borders, and much of the decoration of this watchcase are set with pearls and turquoises. The dial is enameled white with black Roman numerals for the hours. Painted on the back of this open-face watch is a half-length portrait of a young woman. She wears a scarf around her head and shoulders and has a headpiece in her hair that consists of stalks of wheat, perhaps in reference to Ceres, an ancient goddess of agriculture. A wide band of stylized flowers set with pearls on a dark blue enameled ground encircles the portrait. The inside cover is colorfully enameled with various scientific instruments, a column, and flowers and inscribed, “seconds” for winding the seconds.
