The edges of the book are in gilt metal. The two covers and back are in pale pink enamel with a lattice in raised white. On each cover is a cartouche with raised gilt scrolls for the frame. These are painted in colors with Italianate landscapes. A man walking beside a woman riding a donkey, a pyramid to the left, a river to the right, a shepherd with sheep and a cow before a classical ruin and playing a flute.
