About this object

The large eight-pointed brass cross depicts Christ upon a smaller eight-pointed cross, with God Savaoth above the Dove of the Holy Ghost flanked by two hovering angels in the top bar, the Sun and Moon with the inscription "We bow before Your cross, Lord, and we glorify Your Resurrection" on the middle bar, and a view of Jerusalem on the lower bar. Above Christ's head is the so-called Pilate's inscription ("Jesus Christ King of the Jews") with "Son of God" on either side of his halo and "King of Glory" beneath the angels. The lance and sponge frame his body and the skull of Adam beneath his feet marks the place as Golgotha. The entire outer edge is bordered with square beading. Traces of gilding are visible, e.g. around the angels. The entire back of the icon is cast in a pattern of grapes and sunflowers, ressembling brocade.
