About this object

Around base and lid is an engraved and stippled acanthus border. About the body of the tankard are four allegorical scenes representing the four seasons: Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring. All in niello on a stippled ground. On the cover is a hunting scene, also in niello, showing a man on horseback, a beater and hounds. One hound is attacking a stag. On the handle is a bell flower design in niello.
