About this object
The ashtray is in the form of a shallow bowl and is carved from grey quartz. The bottom of the tray is set with a ruble coin of Catherine II. On the obverse is the bust in profile of the Empress on blue enameled background; her name and title are inscribed around the edge. The back of the coin, showing through the underside of the ashtray, has a plain silver setting featuring the double-headed eagle and the date 1776. The dish came in Hillwood's collection with its original Fabergé box.
