About this object
On the cover of the gold box, an oval carved intaglio in cornelian depicts a scene from the Greek mythology, Lycurgus cutting down the vines slays his own son (from the collection of Prince Stanislaw Poniatowski of Poland (1754-1833)). The stone is framed by a narrow black enamel band with a tiny diamond at both the top and the bottom. At either side is an applied ornament in the shape of a stylized leaf set with tiny diamonds and sapphires. The cover is edged by a band in red enamel with a meander motif and a thin line in dark blue enamel on the inner side. A square floweret in white gold set with diamonds and a sapphire in the center adorns each corner. A very small thumbpiece is set with tiny diamonds. The box rests on stylized bracket feet.
