About this object

An etui, or bodkin holder, is a decorative container used to hold bodkins (hairpins), toothpicks, or other small tools.

The egg is made from bloodstone which is hollow. Both the pieces, top and bottom, are held in a cage chased in gold with very elaborate rococo scrolls and flowers. On the cover is a dog and squirrel and on the lower half are two birds. The hinge has a band with an inscription in gold letters on a red translucent enamelled ground. The hinge is released by pressing a tiny rose diamond.
