About this object

A hinged rectangular box with a scalloped edge. The cover is set with a rectangular panel of an Italian mosaic which represents an italianate landscape. There are two small figures and grazing cattle in the foreground. One figure holds the symbol for the God Mercury over his shoulder. The other holds a sheaf of wheat. There is a village in the background and a temple at the far right. This is framed by a narrow blue and white enamel band. The edge of the box itself is wavy and has a pointed design. There are scrolls in the spaces between the enamel band and the edge. The bottom has eight clusters of leaves in chased gold combined with other motifs in blue and white enamel all on a matte ground. These surround one floral motif in the center. This is also surrounded by a wavy edge with an enamel design.
