Volunteer Services Internship for Summer 2021

The volunteer services department is seeking a summer intern.

The intern will work closely with the volunteer services staff, human resources staff and Hillwood volunteers to evaluate and plan volunteer roles that support visitor engagement. The intern will assist the department with developing, implementing, and evaluating volunteer roles in the museum setting. The internship may also be involved in the creation of tools that support hybrid work. 

The intern will gain insight and have the opportunity to develop skills related to the operation of a museum and non-profit management, such as writing, researching, relationship building, relationship management, data analysis, and typical administrative tasks associated with the volunteer program. 

Duties include:

  • Assist in the implementation and evaluation of new volunteer roles on Hillwood's campus.
  • Assist with the preparation for upcoming volunteer roles, like Garden Docent and Visitor Services Volunteers.
  • Attend interdepartmental meetings to support planning and evaluation.
  • Interact with museum staff in meaningful ways, from a variety of departments, such as Curatorial, Marketing, and Visitor Services. 


  • Interest in and curiosity about museum operations, non-profit management, or volunteer program management. 
  • Some experience or studies in a field such as non-profit management, human resources, business administration or leadership, is a plus. 
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to adapt and problem solve. 
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills. 
  • A basic proficiency level in the use of Microsoft Office, including Word, Outlook, and Excel. Office 365 experience a plus. 

Dates for the internship can be flexible and generally run from June 2021 through August 2021. The internship entails a commitment of no less than 8 weeks, 3-5 days a week not to exceed 256 hours. The majority of the internship will take place during the workweek, some weekend hours required. Actual days and hours of work will be determined by mutual agreement. The internship pays $15 per hour.
