Virtual Floral Design How-To | Holiday Blooms

Celebrate the holiday season with a floral arrangement full of luxuriously rich colors and festive blooms.

Floral arrangement featuring red rosesAmi Wilber shares a step-by-step guide to create your own arrangement with plenty of time to ask questions. Supplies are not included, but a materials list, including suggested alternatives, is included below, should participants wish to follow along at home. 


For an additional fee of $65, participants will receive all necessary materials, including flowers, greenery and a container. Exact supplies may vary based on availability due to coronavirus-related supply chain issues, but expect to see:

    • 3-5 pomegranates 
    • 5-7 red roses 
    • 1 bunch red ranunculus
    • 5-7 burgundy carnations
    • Suggested alternatives include red apples or Christmas balls, red carnations, red pom pons daisies, red mini gerbera dasies, red tulips, burgundy stock and red hypericum
    • Noble fir tips
    • Carolina sapphire
    • Seeded eucalyptus
    • Suggested alternatives: Boxwood, cedar or juniper, or magnolia leaves
    • Red ceramic container, 4" high and 7.5" diameter
    • 9"x18" piece of chicken wire to secure stems
    • Floral tape
    • Wood plant or craft stakes for pomegranates or apples

Participants will also need pruning shears, floral shears or scissors, and water. Materials are limited to twenty.

Interested participants must pre-order their materials by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, November 23, and collect them from Hillwood the morning of the program. Contact-free pickup is available between 10 a.m. and noon on Thursday, December 9. If you have purchased materials from Hillwood in the past, please consider returning old flower buckets when you collect supplies.


This virtual workshop begins at 1:30 p.m. and is presented live via Zoom. Participants are encouraged to join with video; questions can be submitted via the chat feature. Please note that this workshop will be recorded.

Ami Wilber became the floral and event décor designer at Hillwood in November 2016. Ami has over twenty-five years of experience as a floral designer. She received a bachelor's degree in fine art from Miami University of Ohio and a Master's of Fine Arts from the Rochester Institute of Technology, School for American Crafts. Prior to joining Hillwood, Ami created sculptures and exhibited her installations at galleries and public spaces in Washington, DC.
