About this object

Trees represent winter. The trunks of the metal trees are sheathed in gold, not covered with gold leaf. The largest tree in each bowl has white jade blossoms representing plum blossoms. In each tree, sitting on the branches, are several birds in a darker jade, some holding a red fruit. Around each of these trees are smaller trees. One is a hand of Buddha with fruit in red carnelian and another one is a flowering plant with long green jade leaves and blossoms on a tall stem in whitish jade. Each bowl has a rock beside one of the smaller trees. Also, each bowl has a bamboo tree in coral. The bowls are in enamel, the background in blue and with an overall pattern of flowers in colors. On each of the long sides of the bowls and of the short sides is a piece of white jade carved all over. These have gilded frames set with red stones or glass. The upper border of the bowls has a similar gilded border with red stones or glass. Each bowl has four enameled feet. The wooden bases, shaped like rectangular Chinese tables, are elaborately carved.
