About this object

This small travelling icon shows the half-length figure of the Kazan Mother of God, her head turned slightly towards the knee-length figure of the Christ Child who stands to her left with His right hand raised in blessing. Only the faces and Christ's right hand are exposed and are painted in a smooth chiaroscuro typical of late 19th century academic trends. The draperies on the silver gilt oklad are engraved with cross-hatching against a simple fish-scale patterned ground. Both haloes are of plain silver gilt, Christ's bearing the inscription O O N. A large suspension ring is mounted on the top edge.
