About this object

This long-sleeved, fur-trimmed gown was worn by Marjorie Merriweather Post for her marriage to Joseph E. Davies on December 12, 1935.

This long sleeved peach velvet dress trimmed with white fur was worn by Mrs. Post for her marriage to Joseph E. Davies on December 12, 1935. The tight fitting bodice has a slightly open neckline with a faced collar that finishes in two tabs at center back. The bodice is pleated at center front with a separate, gathered panel attached at collar and waist. Tight fitting sleeves close at the wrist with a row of small, self covered buttons and loops. The point of the sleeve extends over the top of the hand. The skirt consists of six gores, seamed flat at the natural waist and flaring to a wide bell shape at hem. A shaped panel trimmed with white fur is inserted at the center front seam and cascades down the front of the skirt in a flute shape. A band of fur trim is also applied to the hem beginning at the side seam. This band graduates in width from 1-1/2" to 9" at the back of the long train. A waist sash with vertical boning is secured at center back with a row of metal hooks and fabric loops. Two long streamers hang from the sash and are loosely tacked to the back panels of the skirt. The garment is unlined. A gros-grain waist tape was inserted and hand secured at natural waistline of dress interior. The garment closes at center back with alternating metal snaps and hooks.
