About this object

When Marjorie Merriweather Post was in her teens, Edwardian fashions still prevailed. At 16, Post was presented to society, an event that would have required a special wardrobe for various functions. This dress, with its pastel colors and boned, silk foundation are characteristic of an Edwardian evening dress. The dress has a low neckline, short sleeves, and slight train. The bodice is made of yellow silk crêpe gathered onto a silk taffeta shell. Decorative elements include a loose sash at the waist, rows of banded lace, pale blue satin ribbons, and floral ornaments. The skirt consists of gathered horizontal bands of lace and organza decorated with ribbon and floral elements. The skirt is supported by a gored, silk taffeta underskirt which is finished with a ruffle and covered cord to add weight at the hem.
