About this object

This traditional Chinese T-shaped jacket belonged to Mrs. Post's mother, Ella Letitia Merriweather Post. The garment is made in an ivory silk with an embroidered cherry blossom pattern in pale pink, green and ivory silk thread. The jacket is lined in a lightweight, pale pink silk. The garment is cut in two front panels and one full back panel. An additional triangular piece of fabric has been added to the lower ege of the garment where a side slit is created. All edges are trimmed with three bands of flat decoration. The innermost band is narrow ribbon with a pink and red floral design. The middle band is wider blue ribbon with cotton and gold thread embroidery. The outder band is a continuous spiral embroidered in gold thread. The sleeves are cut in one panel and trimmed at the edges with the same banded motif. The jaket has an applied mandarin collar and closes at center front with four sets of fabric loops and a round metal ball button.
