About this object

This theatrical gold velvet cloak is lined with mint green silk charmeuse. The body of the garment is cut narrow in front, with a princess seamed back flaring from the waist to the hem and ending in a long train. The garment has a wide flat collar. The collar conceals braided cord that is knotted on each side at center front and extends in one loop and free-hanging tie ending in a large upholstery tassel. The garment secures beneath the knots with a metal hook and eye and hangs open the length of the cloak. Two piece sleeves are made with a tight fitting upper portion to which a large bell sleeve is attached at the bicept. The sleeve has a dagged edge, giving the garment a very theatrical quality. Two interior straps at the shoulders probably secured a matching garment. Circular weights are placed in the interior of the train along the center back hem.
