About this object

Navy blue cocktail dress. Bodice is built on a strapless, acetate foundation with a machine-made, corded lace overbodice attached just above waist. Foundation is cut in a princess line and boned at all seams. The overbodice has a wide scoop neckline and cap sleeves. The back is decorated with two flat bows at neck and center back, concealing hook and snap closures. A full, tubular skirt of navy acetate is tightly pleated to the bodice at the natural waist seam. A lace overlay is attached 3-1/2 inches below waist seam and continues the length of the skirt. The scalloped edge of the lace is turned under at the hem, indicating that the skirt was originally longer. The garment closes at the center back with a metal zipper. The dress was worn with a petticoat constructed of black felted paper pleated flat on an acetate yoke and finished with a scalloped edge. The petticoat closes with a metal hook and eye at top and bottom of yoke. A shaped leather belt, with fabric applied to front and buckle, completes the garment.
