About this object

The yoke, or oplech'e, is made from a s a deep red velvet richly embroidered in a distinct Russian style in which each pearl is sewn onto a foundation of white cording and surrounded by masses of brightly-colored stones. The remainder of the garment is made from a noblewoman’s worn out brocaded silk dress (or dresses). The main part is a yellow silk decorated with red roses and blue flowers. The borders are a similar blue floral brocade. Fragments of the blue and yellow silks have been carefully pieced together so that the body of the felon appears to have been made from whole cloth. It is lined in a brightly patterned linen from the 19th or early 20th centuries.
