About this object

In the center against a blue silk ground is embroidered the scene of the Descent from the Cross in gilt and silver threads and in colored silk threads. Christ is being lowered into His sarcophagus, with the Virgin Mary behind him and the other two Maries to the right. In the left background is St. John and another Mary. Joseph of Arimethea and another man hold the swaddling cloth. A cross with the crown of thorns in the center background and above the Dove of the Holy Ghost and clouds. To the right and to the left are archangels. The border, now faded to a pale orange-red, is embroidered with an inscription in Church Slavonic.
