STATUETTE OF A MAN, ONE OF TWO

Creator(s): Meissen Porcelain Manufactory (Manufacturer)

On view in: Marjorie Post's Bedroom Hall

About this object

The statuette represents a man. He could represent fall from a set of seasons or wine from a pair representing bread and wine. He is a Bacchanalic type and is tall and thin. He is nude except for a flowing drapery which is mauve pink with scattered gold leaves, and lined in pale yellow. On his head is a wreath of green grapes and leaves, and he holds a bunch of green grapes in his raised left hand. There is a footed cup filled with purple wine in his right hand, and his forearm rests on a tall white pitcher which supports the figure. There are some grape vines scattered over it and the high molded rococo base which is touched with gold. Over his right shoulder hangs a green strap from which hangs the carcass of a rabbit.
