About this object

An oval porcelain box with a hinged cover. The white porcelain is painted with battle scenes on the cover, inside and outside on the front, back and bottom of the main body of the box. On the outside of the cover are two pairs of horsemen fighting with swords, with the rest of the army and a castle in the background. Inside the cover is a camp scene with a tent and officers playing a game on the top of the drum. On the front is a battle scene with a horseman dead at the left, two men on horseback fighting with swords in the center and a man with rifle on horseback coming from the right. The army is fighting in the background. On the back is a tent at the left while four officers are drinking in the foreground. On the bottom is a battle scene with a yellow flag, and at left foreground are two cannoneers being attacked by two horsemen from the right. The hinge and the lining of the main body of the box are made in gilt metal. There is an engraved thumbpiece with a floral and leaf motif. This box is doubtless connected with an actual war, possibly the Seven Years War.
