About this object

The swelling form of the sugar bowl is reminiscent of the feminine waistlines that inspire many of Zeisel's designs, including the cups and creamer of this service. The top of the lid is indented in imitation of a belly button, a motif that has appeared throughout Zeisel's career.

Like the cup, the sugar bowl is set on an oval foot echoing the oval shape of the saucers and plates. The side walls of the sugar bowl extend far above the lid in two gently curved arms that take demonstrate the translucence and color of the bone china. The handle is also atypical in that it is not attached at top and bottom; rather, it rises from the top of one side of the cup.
