About this object

The teapot's ovoid body is reminiscent of Zeisel's familiar form of the feminine midriff, which is repeated in the service's creamer, sugar bowl, and cup. The handle is molded as one continual piece of the body and, like the tea cup, arches high above the lid in a manner reminiscent of Biedermeier and Empire ceramics. The teapot's attached, S-curve spot is one of the few traditional elements in the service's design. The top of the lid is indented in imitation of a belly button, a motif that has appeared throughout Zeisel's career.

The handle is molded as one continual piece of the body and, like the tea cup, arches high above the lid in a manner reminiscent of Biedermeier and Empire ceramics. The handle's high arc ends in a soft tip that is molded to appear to lay against the body of the teapot rather than disappearing or being reintegrated into it. At the top of the teapot, opposite the handle, the edge has been extended and curves outward in a manner that echoes the curved lip of the cup and the extended, uplifted "arms" of the sugar bowl. The teapot's attached, S-curve spot is one of the few traditional elements in the service's design.
