Creator(s): Unknown (Manufacturer) , Sèvres Porcelain Manufactory (After)

On view in: French Drawing Room

About this object

This is an unusually large pair of vases with elephants' heads after the Sèvres model from the 18th century. Both have spoon-shaped medallions, front and back, each with cupids floating in the sky with bows and arrows all on a white ground. The rest of the background is mostly apple green decorated with sprays of roses, leaves, etc. in gold. The handles are elephant heads whose trunks curl upward and each trunk ends in two candle holders. From behind the elephants' ears are strings of pearls and gold beads. Between each two strings are garlands of flowers on a white ground. Elaborate platform bases.
