About this object

Folding brise fan consisting of thin, ivory sticks pierced reserves on top and between the main image and the vignette. The sticks are connect at the top with a thin strip of silk. The main image is painted directly on the obverse of the stick and features finely dressed men and women frolicking in a pastoral scene to music played by a man with a violin in the corner. In a vignette below the picture are images of chinoiserie figures. On either side of the main image are pierced and pained sticks with small vignettes with chinoiserie figures. Each guard is carved and painted on one side and only painted on the other with similar motifs as those found throughout the fan. On the reverse side of the fan is an identical copy of the obverse images—but only in simple line drawings. The head of the fan has inlayed tortoiseshell on the guards and a mother of pearl washer.
