WATCH

Creator(s): Breguet (Watchmaker)

On view in: French Drawing Room

About this object

The watch case is made from gold. On the upper part of the face is the seated figure of Father Time holding two scythes, made of a thin gold plaque in low relief and silhouetted against a recess with a black ground. When the watch strikes, a figure on either side, holding a hammer and hidden by columns, emerges into the space of the recess as if striking a bell. The dial encloses black arabic numerals, each in a white circle on an engraved checkered ground. The dial is flanked by cornucopias holding flowers, chased in low relief. Inscribed on the dial in black capitals on white, is the name BREGUET, the maker of the mechanical works.
