About this object

On cover is an oval reserve containing a winter troika scene with a coachman and three passengers in niello. The borders are decorated with scrolling leaves recalling ornament on 17th century Russian niello work. Borders have leaf scrolls in niello on a stippled ground. Back has a round medallion for a monogram and the background is identical to the front of the box. Thumb piece is a green stone en cabochon resembling chrysoprase. Interior is gilded.
