About this object

On the cover of the rectangular box is a medallion with a female figure crowned with a laurel leaf seated on a cloud within a medallion framed by a laurel garland. A bird is seated on her shoulder and a lamb rests by her side. The remainder of the cover is covered with horizontal stripes interrupted with eight-pointed stars, all in niello. On the underside is a similar medallion framed with a laurel garland. Within this is a harbor scene, engraved and stippled. At far right is a large ship with at least two masts. A small group rows away from or toward the ship in a small boat. On the shore, at left, is a large church in the foreground. The towers of a walled city are visible in the background. scene in niello and the same background. The sides are decorated with a leaf pattern in silver and niello.
