About this object

The gilt cut is set in an elaborate openwork basket in openwork with baskets of flowers, scrolls, swags, etc. There are four enameled medallions, each surrounded by rose-cut diamonds and emeralds. On the medallions are enameled the following: 1. Christ blessing (inscribed: [transcription]), 2. the Mother of God (inscribed: [transcription]), 3. the Crucifixion with Mary (inscribed: [transcription]) and [transcription]. Around the lip is engraved in Russian: "This is My Blood of the New Covenant, Drink from It everyone." The gilt knop is baluster-shaped and undecorated. The wide gilt base also has an all-over fretwork in silver similar to that on the cup and four enameled medallions surrounded by rose-cut diamonds. These enamels represent 1. Gethsemene, 2. Christ crowned with thorns, 3. Christ on the road to Calvary, 4. the Crucifixion. Christ is identified by [transcription] in each instance.
