About this object

The cup has two rectangular cartouches, one with the Deesis, with Christ seated on a throne between Mary and John. Near Christ is inscribed [transcription] and with W O H (Light) in Christ's halo. The other cartouche on the opposite side of the cup has engraved the other patriarchal crown, cross, the lance and sponge and Veronica, all there before the walls of Jerusalem, each one identified by an inscription. There is a long inscription above the cartouche. Around the lip of the cup runs another long inscription in Russian: "Drink from it everyone; this is My Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you many for the remission of sins." The knop and base have a relief repoussé design, alternately engraved in scale pattern and lozenges, the former in silver, the latter gilt.
