About this object

Around the sides are three large oval cartouches with frames of laurel leaves and cloud-like effects. Cartouche on the front depicts a crowned empress seated on a throne with an ermine canopy above her and holding a shield on which is engraved the facade of a building. On the other two ovals, one has a warrior wearing an armor, holding a book in his left hand, piercing a snake with a sword in his right hand and stepping on the scull with his right foot. (St. George?). The other cartouche has a standing saint holding a bunch of flowers and swinging a censer or an oil lamp. Around the upper part of the tankard is an inscription in Cyrillic referring to the medallions below: "Adornment and majesty","The ascent of a child," and "Art of administration." Above each of the ball feet is a cartouche witha crown supported by putti; the one at the left engraved in the center with "A" and the one on the right with "3" both flanked with laurel branches(could be reversed Russian "E"). Each of the ball feet has in repoussé a mask of a satyr with grapes in his hair and a ring in his mouth; the same motif being repeated on the thumb piece on the handle. On the outside of the c-shaped handle is a row of fruit and flowers in repoussé, the same design being repeated around the edge of the lid while within this border is the double headed eagle with the three crowns and the chain and badge of St. Andrew First Called.
