About this object

This dressing table set comprises many pieces characteristic of a lady’s dressing set of the 1930s such a mirror and several containers. The bottles would have contained eau de cologne, perfumes and skin toners while the round boxes would have been used for powders and cold creams. The lids engraved with the Davies crest in the center may indicate that the set was a wedding gift to Marjorie Merriweather Post when she married Joseph E. Davies in 1935 as sets like these were customary gifts for brides in the upper echelons of society.

Dressing table set in silver gilt and glass consists of one hand mirror, three round boxes with glass bottoms and silver gilt lids, two round boxes in silver gilt, one round box in silver gilt, one jar with silver gilt lid, six bottles with silver gilt tops, one bottle and one bottle. Lids of all pieces are silver gilt, plain with Hutton crest in center. Glass has panels engraved and flowers alternating with the vertical rows.
