About this object

Candlestick consists of a candle holder with repousse designs of leaf tips, a circular drip pan with incised scrolls on the edge and repousse foliage motifs on the bowl, standard divided into three sections by bands of geometrical and stylized foliage in openwork, and a base in three tiers. It was made in fourteen sections, connected with an iron rod running through the entire length of the candlestick. Knop in center and baluster shaped lower section of the standard have repousse cherubim among the foliage. First tier of the base is decorated with incised foliage, the second is a broad band of openwork foliage patterns bordered with narrow band of parallel vertical grooves, third consists of six widely spaced, inward curving scrolls decorated with leaf motifs. Flat circular base is modern.

Signature marks:: INSCRIPTION In the year 1726, on the 5th day of March, were built these two candlesticks, to be located in the synodal Cathedral of the Twelve Apostles, by decree sent by Her Imperial Highness, Autocrat of all the Russias, sent form the chancelory of the ruling synod, from the sanctissim, in the year 1725, the 24th day of June. The weight of both of them, aside from the iron-rod and the resin, is 13 pounds 36 zolotniks. [On standard in Cyrillic]
