About this object

The oval cover of the box has an oval rock crystal cabochon in the center. It is a carved intaglio with the Medusa's head. There are four round cabochons surrounding this, each a carved intaglio with symbols of the four seasons. Between these are oblong crystals carved with floral motifs. The rest of the cover is carved with concentric circles that are engraved and enameled. At either side of each round cabochon is a semi-circular piece of lapis lazuli. The sides are set with two panels of rock crystal each engraved with a symbol and an inscription. Between each panel is a pilaster set with a piece of lapis lazuli and with capitals and bases that are enameled green and white. Each rock crystal panel has a frame in white and black enamel. The base is set with an oval piece of rock crystal engraved with a meander motif. The four feet are griffins. The box has its original fitted box.
