About this object

A cabinet-like jewel box in the Eastern style. The legs recall Chinese furniture, the main part is covered with enamelled designs in the Persian taste, while the back has a silver gilt carved Persian design with details in niello. The cabinet has a large hasp on the front set with rubies and rose diamonds. While this and the lid are lifted, six drawers open on hinges, three to the left and three to the right. Below this is another drawer with handle. This cabinet is said to have been given to the Tsar Alexander III by the Emir of Bokhara.
