About this object

Cover is shaped like a book. Two pairs of rings are on inside of upper cover and one on the lower cover, which fit together, and through them, a gold pencil passes and holds the carnet together. Pencil is reeded and at top is a cabochon emerald in a star like setting of small diamonds. In center of cover is an oval miniature of Empress Alexandra Feodorovna with a frame of diamonds. The Empress faces left. She is dressed in the court costume, kokoshnik with white veil and pearls. She wears on her décolleté gown the red ribbon of the Order of St. Catherine and the blue ribbon and star of the Order of St. Andrew the First Called. Front cover has a border in enamel imitating 18th century French work with leaves in green enamel and alternate dots in white and topaz enamel. At top and bottom as well as on the corresponding back panels, the enamel was painted in dendric forms in lavender. Central panel around the miniature of the Empress is enameled in same plain pink over a guilloché ground in a sunburst pattern. Spine has three sections of pink translucent enamel over engraved ribbing and with imitation moss agate.
