About this object

An etui, or bodkin holder, is a decorative container used to hold bodkins (hairpins), toothpicks, or other small tools.

The egg is carved from two pieces of bloodstone. The bloodstone pieces are each held in an openwork gold cage chased with rococo scrolls criss-crossed with sprays of roses and leaves carved in gold. The hinge is undecorated except for a simple thumb-piece.
