About this object

An etui, or bodkin holder, is a decorative container used to hold bodkins (hairpins), toothpicks, or other small tools.

The two pieces of the bloodstone egg are hollowed out. Each piece is held in a cage made in chased gold consisting of rococo scrolls and cornucopias full of roses. The hinge has an inscription in gold letters on an opaque white enamel background. A small rose diamond when pressed releases the hinge.
