About this object

An etui, or bodkin holder, is a decorative container used to hold bodkins (hairpins), toothpicks, or other small tools. This cylindrical etui is cut from two pieces of bloodstone accented with four gold bands decorated with rococo scrolls swags of roses. The bands are set with rose-cut diamonds or rubies. The interior of the etui is partly lined with copper.

This tube-shaped etui (bodkin holder) is cut from two pieces of bloodstone each slightly rounded at one end. It has four decorative gold bands, one at each end of the holder, and two near the central opening. These are decorated with rococo scrolls which are partly open and from which hand swags of roses. At intervals on the band are set rose cut diamonds or rubies alternating, sometimes single stones, sometimes in groups. The interior is partly lined with copper.
