Hours
The Estate and Museum Shop are open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm, and select Sundays and evenings.

The Café serves lunch Tuesday through Saturday, 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. Royal tea starts at 2:30pm. The Café closes at 4:30 pm. On select Sundays the Café is open from 1:00 to 4:30 pm.

Hillwood is closed during the month of January and most national holidays. (NOTE: Hillwood is closed Friday July 4)

Advance reservations are required for Sunday visitation.

Availability
There are two ways to visit Hillwood!

On the day of your visit, come to the Visitor Center to make arrangements.

If you prefer the convenience of advance reservations, please call 202.686.5807 and leave your name and number and a reservations representative will return your call by the next business day. On spring weekends, daily availability may be limited so advance reservations will guarantee entrance. Reservations are required for all Sunday visits.

Visitors should plan at least three (3) hours or indulge in a whole day, leisurely touring the Mansion & gardens, dining at the Café and visiting the Museum Shop.

Tour Options
Hillwood allows visitors to select from a number of tour options that best suit their preference and pace.

Assistive Listening Device icon Acoustiguide Audio Tours: This random-access tour includes a narrated 90-minute Mansion tour and 60-minute garden tour. A children’s audio tour, Explore Russia!, is available.  Kings, Queens, and Soup Tureens, emphasizing the French collection, and Treasures & Traditions, highlighting the Russian collection, are additional audio tours also available. Guided Tours: Docent tours of the Mansion and gardens may be available the day of your visit. Please check at the Visitor Center tour desk for tickets.

  • Docent-led tours of the Mansion are offered Tuesday through Saturday, at 11:30 am and 1:30pm, and on select Sundays at 1:30 pm.

  • Docent-led garden tours are offered April 8 to June 21, Tuesday through Saturday, at 10:30 am and 12:30 pm. Printed and audio garden tours are available year-round.

Written Tours: Written tours provide an overview of the Mansion and gardens and are perfect for visitors limited by time. Written tours are available in English, French and Russian.

Before beginning your tour of the Mansion and gardens, please take time in the Visitor Center Theater to view our orientation film, the perfect introduction to Hillwood.

Custom Tours
Custom tours are tours booked outside of preset tour times, foreign language tours or tours focusing on specific areas of the collection and/or gardens. These tours can be for any sized group up to one hundred visitors and are based on availability.

Visitor Services and Accessibility

WheelchairRestrooms
Accessible public restrooms are located in the Visitor Center, Café, and the Mansion. Changing stations are located in the Visitor Center restrooms.

Wheelchair Wheelchairs
Wheelchairs are available at the Visitor's Center on a first-come, first-served basis.

Assistive Listening Device Assistive Listening Devices
Hillwood provides assistive listening devices for the orientation film, programs, audio tours (neck loops are available), and guided tours. When checking in at the information desk in the Visitor Center, please notify a staff member if you need a device. Audio tours are also available in print form upon request at the information desk in the Visitor Center.

Hillwood provides interpreters for scheduled programs only. Interpreters are hired on a case-by-case basis, so we require advance notice of requests. If you would like to have a sign language, oral, or cued speech interpreter, please call 202.243.3933 no later than two weeks in advance of the program you plan to attend.

BrailleLarge Print Braille Information Guides and Large Print Brochures
Braille information guides and large print brochures are available upon request at the information desk in the Visitor Center.

Coatroom
While visiting the Mansion, please check umbrellas, coats, cameras, backpacks, strollers, and shopping bags at the staffed coatroom located in the Entry Hall.

Lost and Found
If you lose an item or mistakenly receive or take an item not belonging to you, please call 202.243.3929 for assistance.

Resource Area
The Resource Area in the Mansion allows visitors to explore the collections, estate, and life of Marjorie Merriweather Post through books, videos, and a computer.

Art Research Library
The Art Research Library, accessible by appointment only, is a non-circulating library dedicated to the decorative arts of Russia and Europe. Visit the Library page for more information or to schedule an appointment.

Visitor Guidelines
To preserve Hillwood’s collections and gardens, and to ensure that everyone has a pleasant visit, we ask that you remember the following:

  • All ages are welcome in the Mansion & Gardens.
  • Turn wireless devices off or set them to vibrate while touring the estate.
  • Photography and videotaping for personal use are allowed outdoors and in the greenhouse only.
  • Food and drink should be consumed in the Café area only.
  • Smoking is permitted near trash receptacles fitted with ashtrays.
  • While visiting the Mansion, please check all umbrellas, coats, cameras, backpacks, strollers, and shopping bags at the coatroom.
  • Enjoy the art with your eyes and mind, but please do not touch.
  • Watch your step in the gardens, as some of the natural stone is uneven. Please stay on the designated paths and do not pick or gather flowers or plants.
  • No pets (except service animals) are permitted on the grounds.

Museum Shop
The Museum Shop features books, jewelry, stationery, and other gifts related to the art collections and gardens. The Museum Shop is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. For additional information or to order merchandise, please visit the Museum Shop page.

Museum Café
Relax and enjoy lunch or Royal Tea at the Café, open from 11:00 am to 4:30 pm. Lunch is served from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm. Our Royal Tea begins at 2:30 pm until 4:30 pm. For parties of four or less, please make your reservation at the Visitor Center the day of your visit. For parties of five or more, please call ahead for reservations at 202.243.3920 or email the Cafi Reservations Manager, at least 24 hours in advance. Directions and Parking
Hillwood offers free parking on the Estate. Handicapped parking is available at the Visitor Center and the Café.

Hillwood is located at 4155 Linnean Avenue, NW, in Washington, D.C. It sits between the Cleveland Park and Van Ness neighborhoods on the edge of Rock Creek Park. Please see the MapQuest® map.

Directions by Car or Taxi

  • From the Capital Beltway (I-495) take the Connecticut Avenue (MD 185) exit south. Proceed about five miles on Connecticut and turn left onto Tilden Street. Take the second left, onto Linnean Avenue. The entrance to the estate will be on the right.
  • From downtown Washington, D.C. Take Connecticut Avenue north and turn right onto Tilden Street. Take the second left, onto Linnean Avenue. The entrance to the estate will be on the right.
  • Taxi services can be called from the Visitor Center.

Directions by Metrorail
Hillwood is a 20-minute walk from the Van Ness/UDC Metro station on the Red Line. From the Metro exit on the east side of Connecticut Avenue, walk south on Connecticut toward Van Ness Auto Care and turn left onto Upton Street. Turn right onto Linnean Avenue. The entrance to the estate will be on the left.

Directions by Metrobus
Take the L1 or L2 bus to the corner of Connecticut Avenue and Tilden Street. Walk east toward Rock Creek Park on Tilden. Turn left onto Linnean Avenue. The entrance to the estate will be on the right.
