First Floor Library
Combining the personal with the exceptional, the First Floor Library provided a cozy place for close friends and family to gather. This room offers a window into the life and personality of Marjorie Merriweather Post in the portraits, paintings, and individual touches scattered throughout.
This room displays an interesting mix of memorabilia and museum-quality objects. The décor mainly reflects the English tradition, from the Georgian style pine paneling to the 18th-century marble mantel, and an abundance of English furnishings, including an interesting collection of miniature furniture. Family portraits in Cartier and other fine frames add a personal touch. An 18th century Parisian furniture bed once was a favorite lounging spot for Marjorie Post’s beloved schnauzer, Scampi.
The paintings also reflect the intimacy of this room. Marjorie’s parents, C.W. and Ella Post, are present in formal portraits, as is Marjorie herself in a lovely portrait by Frank O. Salisbury. Special attention is given to her beautiful four-masted yacht, the Sea Cloud, both in a replica of the ship and in a painting by Montague Dawson.
